Does Fidelity have brokerage accounts?
Gain the advantage of a Fidelity brokerage account
(Fidelity charges $0 account fees and has no minimums for opening or maintaining a brokerage account.)
In most situations, you will find what you need at Fidelity. There are a few downsides. Fidelity does not offer cryptocurrency investing. The company is also missing some features found on other investment platforms, like futures trading and paper trading, where you can practice trading.
The Fidelity Cash Management Account ("Account") is a brokerage account designed for spending and cash management. Fidelity is not a bank and brokerage accounts are not FDIC-insured, but uninvested cash balances are eligible for FDIC insurance.
Is Fidelity a safe company to invest with? Yes, Fidelity is one of the safest brokerages to invest with. It's an industry leader with a stellar reputation and fully regulated in the U.S. with the SEC and FINRA, is trusted by over 43 million people and holds over $11.5 trillion in assets under administration.
Overall Appeal. Fidelity and Schwab are both excellent choices. These investment firms offer thousands of funds. There are some nuances, such as Fidelity being better for crypto traders and Schwab being more optimal for futures traders.
- Best Overall: Fidelity.
- Best for Low Costs: Fidelity.
- Best for Beginners: Charles Schwab.
- Best for Advanced Traders: Interactive Brokers.
- Best for ETFs: Fidelity.
- Best for Options Trading: tastytrade.
- Best for International Trading: Interactive Brokers.
While Fidelity wins out overall, Vanguard is the best option for retirement savers. Its platform offers tools and education focused specifically on retirement planning.
If a brokerage fails, another financial firm may agree to buy the firm's assets and accounts will be transferred to the new custodian with little interruption. The government also provides insurance, known as SIPC coverage, on up to $500,000 of securities or $250,000 of cash held at a brokerage firm.
Fidelity is one of the most well-rounded brokerages available today, with no commissions on stock or ETF trades and a selection of no-expense-ratio index funds suited to both beginner and active investors.
What bank is behind Fidelity?
The Fidelity® Debit Card is issued by PNC Bank, N.A., and the debit card program is administered by BNY Mellon Investment Servicing Trust Company.
Protecting your assets
With our Customer Protection Guarantee, we reimburse you for losses from unauthorized activity in your accounts. We also participate in asset protection programs such as FDIC and SIPC to help provide the best service possible.
Wells Fargo and Fidelity Investments are independent entities and are not legally affiliated.
Fidelity's guideline: Aim to save at least 15% of your pre-tax income each year for retirement, which includes any employer match.

There is no cost to open and no annual fee for Fidelity's Traditional, Roth, SEP, and Rollover IRAs. A $50 account close out fee may apply. Fund investments held in your account may be subject to management, low balance and short term trading fees, as described in the offering materials.
Bottom Line. If you want to actively trade within your accounts, Fidelity might be the better option. However, if you want to focus more on index investing, or you want to use a robo-advisor, Vanguard has a slight edge.
Fidelity was voted the most trusted wealth management company for 2023 by the readers of Investor's Business Daily,9 earning top rankings for "financial soundness, quality of products and services, protecting privacy and security, and sensitivity to customer needs."
The largest brokerage by assets under management, or AUM, is Vanguard, started by famed investor John C. Bogle in 1975. The firm has grown to manage $8.6 trillion in assets, or put another way, more than 80 times the estimated number of stars in the Milky Way galaxy, according to NASA.
- Charles Schwab - Best for high net worth investors.
- Merrill Edge - Best rewards program.
- Fidelity - Best overall online broker.
- Interactive Brokers - Great overall, best for professionals.
- E*TRADE - Best web-based platform.
What is the downside to a brokerage account?
Downsides of a standard brokerage account
Since it's a taxable account, you'll have to pay taxes on earnings in your account, including capital gains and dividends.
If you've got a large chunk of cash, you might secure better returns outside of a brokerage account. You could lose money. If your money is swept into a money market fund, that cash won't be insured by the FDIC or SIPC. It's possible to lose money.
(Although Vanguard offers some actively managed funds, too.) Fidelity has a wider range of investment funds if you want active management, and a more robust array of services if you want to buy and sell individual stocks.
Ownership. Fidelity and Vanguard are both privately owned companies. Descendants of founder Edward Johnson own 49% of Fidelity, and Fidelity employees own the remaining 51%. Vanguard, on the other hand, is owned by the more than 30 million investors in its funds.
The Boston-based Johnson family owns 49% of mutual fund company Fidelity. The other 51% is owned by employees. Abigail Johnson is the third generation of the family to run the company. She took over from her father Edward "Ned" Johnson III in 2014.
