Which US banks offer foreign currency exchange?
For example, Wells Fargo offers 70 currencies for use in more than 100 countries, and Bank of America exchanges currencies for more than 100 countries. You may be able to get foreign currency in cash at your local bank branch, or you can order currency online or by phone to be delivered to your home.
- TD Bank: TD Bank offers 55 different currencies. ...
- Service Federal Credit Union: The number of currencies available for customers at Service Credit Union exceeds 60. ...
- US Bank: Customers of US Bank can exchange money at a nearby branch.
Visit a U.S. Bank branch and a banker will help you through the process. We encourage you to make an appointment to allow time for questions and processing. Full order returns within seven (7) days of purchase: We will buy back the currency at the same exchange rate used for purchase.
Any Bank of America customer can exchange foreign currency at any financial center.
Banks and credit unions are generally the best places to exchange currency, with reasonable exchange rates and the lowest fees.
This is one of the few things that major banks like Chase actually get right. You just swipe your card abroad, and the purchases show up on your statement in US dollars, magically converted at the right exchange rate. But before packing your bags, make sure you have a card with no foreign transaction fees.
A Bank of America International Transaction Fee of 3% will apply when converting your currency.
Bank of America account holders can exchange foreign currency (no coins) for U.S. dollars at a full-service financial center.
Banks, credit unions, online bureaus, and currency converters provide convenient and often inexpensive currency exchange services. Once on foreign soil, the best means to convert currency is to use a foreign automated teller machine (ATM) or identify whether your bank has ATMs or banking affiliates nearby.
Whether or not the wire transfer fee is waived, Wells Fargo makes money when we convert one currency to another currency for you. The exchange rate used when Wells Fargo converts one currency to another is set at our sole discretion, and it includes a markup.
Can I exchange currency at a bank without an account?
Even if you don't open a foreign bank account, these bank branches still might be able to exchange currency for you. If they are willing to do so you'll likely have to pay a fee, just as you would in the U.S. if you aren't a banking customer.
Returning with unused foreign banknotes? Simply exchange them for US . dollars at a competitive rate at any Citibank branch ($5; free if you exchange over $1,000).
Orders placed before 2 p.m. (delivery address local time) are shipped the same day. Orders placed after 2 p.m. or on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays are shipped the next business day. With standard shipping, orders generally arrive within 1-3 business days.
You can pick up your euros and US dollars from your nearest branch in as little as 2 hours, or choose delivery to your home.
Buying currency in branch
Many of our branches keep euros and US Dollars in stock.
Is it better to exchange U.S. dollars to euros while still in the U.S. or when I actually go to Europe? I always recommend to my clients that they exchange dollars into euros while in Europe. Use the ATM machines, found nearly everywhere. The exchange rate will be less than going to a bank or exchange service.
Chase foreign transaction fees
The Chase debit cards that they show on their website charge a fee of 3% on every transaction you make in a currency that isn't US dollars. That covers ATM withdrawals, cash transactions away from ATMs, and purchases you make with your card.
Chase Foreign Transaction Fees:
Chase Freedom Unlimited®: 3% of each transaction in U.S. dollars. Chase Freedom Flex℠: 3% of each transaction in U.S. dollars. Chase Sapphire Reserve®: $0. Chase Freedom Rise℠: 3% of the amount of each transaction in U.S. dollars.
Head to your bank or credit union before you leave to avoid paying ATM transaction costs. You may even receive a better exchange rate. Credit unions and banks will exchange your dollars into a foreign currency before and after your trip when you have a checking or savings account with them.
Where to Get Good Rates: ATMs and Local Banks. The best place to exchange money is a local ATM or a bank. Many foreign banks are happy to exchange your dollars for local currency for a better rate than you find elsewhere, or you can go to an ATM to skip the line.
Should I exchange money before I travel to Europe?
Resist the urge to buy foreign currency before your trip.
Some tourists feel like they must have euros or British pounds in their pockets when they step off the airplane, but they pay the price in bad stateside exchange rates. Wait until you arrive to withdraw money.
Bank of America will assess an international transaction fee of 3% of the U.S. dollar amount for all ATM withdrawals processed in foreign currency. International ATM operators may offer to do your currency conversion for you, but they may charge a higher fee for conversion.
If you do want to wait until you arrive in Europe to get your euros, a word of caution. It's not usually a good idea to exchange currency at the airport, or even at your hotel. These places are definitely convenient, but you're likely to pay a premium for it. Commission fees can be high and exchange rates unfavorable.
Navy Federal partners with our dedicated correspondent bank to provide exchange rates for converting funds. This rate factors the cost of exchanging the funds in addition to the actual exchange rate.
- Use airport kiosks prior to leaving the US.
- Buy traveler's checks or foreign currency cash from your bank or credit union.
- Choose an online exchange bureau.
- Buy currency on arrival at your hotel or in popular tourist areas.
