Obituaries Record MARION CHRONICLE- -TRIBUNE TUESDAY, MAY 15, 2007. A4 Bertha E. Barnett Patricia E. Scheffer Eleanor M. Shanahan Oct.

17, 1923 Bertha Edna Barnett, 83, died at 3:28 p.m. Saturday, surrounded by: her loving children, in Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne, after a courageous battle against kidney disease. Her love for life and family kept her spirits high and her battle fierce right up until the end. Bertha was the daughter of the late and Viola Purvis in Bath County, Ky. It was in Kentucky that she met and married the man of her life, Bernard "Buck" Barnett on Feb.

7, 1942. They shared many wonderful years until his death on Aug. 2, 1982. From this union came those she cherished most in life, her four children, eldest son, Barry Michael, preceding her in death in 1977, leaving her broken hearted. She also took into her family, Bobby Riddle, Maxine Riddle and Karen Riddle, caring for them and loving them as if they were her own children.

She loved all of the children unconditionally. Bertha spent 1 her early years working in the Marion area, spending many years working for Long's Cleaners and Marion Cafeteria. Never having met a stranger made working with the public a favorite. Later in life, she enjoyed her favorite hobby, bingo. Not only did she love the game, she loved the camaraderie.

This is where she met many of her dearest friends. She played this game for over 40 years. Never did she leave a bingo game mad or wishing she had not gone. Winning was just an added bonus, as long as she was spending time with people she loved, the day was complete. The only thing that could pull her away from the game of bingo was babysitting the two most precious children in the world to her, Laycee and Steavee, her greatgranddaughters.

The games and messes the three of them created were unbelievable. Bertha and Steavee traveled around the world on their make-believe vacations, packing their suitcas- May 12, priceless. Barnett; sister, Gertrude Crouch, Hamilton, Ohio; and in-laws, nieces, nephews and many beloved friends. Besides her beloved husband and son, Bertha was preceded in death by three brothers, Charlie, Archie and Emmitt Purvis.
